PhillisWheatleyLogo From almost 100 books that were considered, Gather at the Table is among the five nominated for the Phillis Wheatley Book Award for Nonfiction (biography and memoir). Winners will be announced July 19 at the 2013 Harlem Book Fair. Sharon Leslie Morgan will attend the award show.

The QBR Wheatley Book Awards recognizes the best African American books and writers in Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Children’s books.

The nominees are:

Gather at the Table: The Healing Journey of a Daughter of Slavery and a Son of the Slave Trade, by Thomas Norman DeWolf and Sharon Leslie Morgan, is the story of two everyday people from diverse backgrounds who are on a mission to overcome the trauma of America’s legacy of slavery and the lingering effects of present-day racism.

Floyd Patterson: The Fighting Life of Boxing’s Invisible Champion, by W. K. Stratton, chronicles the life of ‘The Gentle Gladiator’ – an athlete overshadowed by Muhammad Ali’s theatrics and Sonny Liston’s fearsome reputation, and a civil rights activist overlooked in the who’s who of race politics.

The One: The Life and Music of James Brown, by RJ Smith, is the definitive biography of the Godfather of Soul, charting his extraordinary life as entrepreneur, civil rights activist, and the most innovative musician of our time.

The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo, by Tom Reiss, is the Pulitzer Prize-winning story of General Alex Dumas, father of novelist Alexandre Dumas, and inspiration for such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. General Dumas was also the son of a black slavewho rose higher in the white world than any man of his race would before our own time.

A Mission From God, by James Meredith, is the memoir from the man who waged a fourteen-month legal campaign to force the state of Mississippi to honor his rights as an American citizen and admit him to the University of Mississippi, where after enduring death threats, daily verbal abuse, and round-the-clock protection from federal marshals and thousands of troops, he became its first black graduate in 1963.

The Trade Paperback edition of Gather at the Table will be released by Beacon Press October 15, 2013.
