Lawdy Miss Scarlet!

Posted September 18th, 2012 by

Creating a book is, in many ways, like having a baby…

First, you are impregnated with an idea. You visualize what it will look like and incubate it until it is ready to see the light of day. There are many sleepless nights along the way as you cope with the heartburn of word choice, sentence structure, and messaging. There are moments of false labor when you tear up pages that just don’t work and need to be rewritten. At birth, you  hold your magnificent creation close to your heart and cry tears of joy.

My baby (a fresh-off-the-press final version hard copy of Gather at the Table) came home from the hospital the other day.

An envelope arrived from Beacon Press. I wasn’t sure what was inside. When I opened it, I screamed: “MY BOOK… born at last!” I clutched it to my heart and wept as I did a happy dance all over the house.

Wonderful book…completely opened my eyes to the harsh realities of our countries' past and the prevailing issues that still linger today. Your need to speak the truth will hopefully be heard by many. Thank you to both you and Thomas for writing it!
